The targets of organic SEO are the 10+/- links on a Google search results page that are not ads. You know, the ones you were actually searching for. Organic SEO’s also target results in Google’s search features like featured snippets and Google for Jobs (pictured below).

What is Important?

The best way to start increasing your organic traffic is to do some Google specific SEO. That’s because as of September 2022, over 92% of all web searches are made through a Google search product.

Factors like a secure certificate, compliant code, Section 508 consideration, and finely tuned meta data across your site are very important. High quality outbound links, a little social networking and regular software updates are also top priority.

A Little Trickery?

Google combines advertising and organic search results on their SERP’s (search engine returns page). The ads seem to have been designed to look like the organic search results, except for minor distinctions (see screenshot below).  However, this sleight-of-hand has been used by all major search engines to some extent.

Relatively few ordinary users (38% according to Pew Research Center) realized that many of the highest placed websites on SERP’s were actually ads so the distinction between paid & organic was originally made within the search engine optimization industry.

Organic SEO vs PPC

Since SEO and pay per click marketing are two completely different things, and many PPC service providers market themselves as SEO’s, the distinction created by the term “Organic SEO” was necessary.

Now, the phrase Organic SEO is common in the SEO community, and generally accepted by the search companies too. The phrase has even been adopted by Google throughout Google products like Google Analytics.
